The Origins of Humanity — Discovery of the Prehistoric Site of Jbel Irhoud

  • Nature and Adventure

The Jbel Irhoud site, classified as a national heritage site, covers a few hectares in a mountainous and semi-arid landscape, accessible by track (suitable vehicle recommended).

Following recent excavations (particularly since 2004), fossil remains of Homo sapiens (skulls, bones, stone tools, animal remains) have been unearthed, profoundly redefining our understanding of the origin of man.

An interpretation and heritage promotion center is being developed, aiming to welcome visitors, researchers and enthusiasts, and to offer an educational and cultural framework around paleoanthropology.

Nestled in the heart of the Youssoufia province, the Jbel Irhoud site is now recognized as one of the cradles of humanity. Here, the oldest fossils attributed to Homo sapiens, dating back nearly 300,000 years, have been discovered, making this place an exceptional testament to our origins.

Visiting Jbel Irhoud means entering the deep history of humanity, walking in the footsteps of our ancestors, and living a unique experience blending history, nature and reflection on the past.
