The Medina of Essaouira

  • Public place
  • Essaouira

The Medina of Essaouira, founded in 1765 by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah with inspiration from the Cornut plan, is a model of a Muslim city integrating varied cultural influences. Since its creation, it has been a place of peaceful coexistence between different ethnic groups and religions, promoting its cultural development and economic prosperity. The Sqalas, unique fortifications in Morocco and Africa, reflect the neoclassical style of European military buildings, reminiscent of the Vauban school.
