The medina and the rue du Souk de Safi

To discover and savor the beauty of the old medina, a pleasant walk consists of taking the boulevard which runs along the seafront, starting from Independence Square until reaching Rue du Souk. This street represents the main artery of the medina, crossing the city right through to Bab Chaâba. The multiple shops that line this long narrow street concentrate all the commercial activity of the medina.

The charm and interest of the place lie in this architectural harmony, where buildings of various cultures and faiths (Christian, Muslim and Jewish) mingle. Approaching the great mosque, a passage leads directly to the Portuguese chapel, erected in 1519. This building, which still retains traces of the Manueline style, constitutes the heart of the Safi cathedral.
