The Bastion of Bab Marrakech
The tower of the Bastion of Bab Marrakech is located in the southwest of the Medina of Essaouira, at the eastern corner of the section of the wall housing the monumental gate of the same name. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since December 2001, this tower now houses an art gallery, while an open-air stage occupies its roof. Built in the XNUMXth century, this bastion had the initial function of being a powder magazine and a munitions warehouse.
During the period of the French protectorate, it was also used as a stable for horses before being abandoned in the 1950s.
