HOLIDAYS

Morocco is one of the few Muslim countries to have a weekly calendar that follows that of most Western countries. Friday is not a public holiday for administrations and public services, even if some arrangements have been made to attend the big Friday prayer. The weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS

  • January 11: anniversary of the independence manifesto
  • May 1: Labor Day
  • July 30: feast of the throne
  • August 14: anniversary of the recovery of Oued Eddahab
  • August 20: anniversary of the revolution of the King and the people
  • August 21: Youth Day
  • 6 November: anniversary of the green march
  • November 18: independence day
RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS

Religious holidays are observed throughout the territory and are celebrated by the vast majority of the population. Defined according to the moon, the dates are not fixed and go back each year by ten days. Ramadan is a key time of the year in the life of Muslims, which lasts 30 days and disrupts habits.

  • Eid al-fitr, "the little party", marks the end of Ramadan.
  • Eid el-kebir, “the great feast”, also called “feast of the sheep”, is the occasion to commemorate the sacrifice of Abraham.
  • The First Moharem is the first day of the Hegira, the Muslim year. The Muslim calendar indeed starts in 622.
  • The Mouloud is a festival celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed.
