The Portuguese Cathedral

  • Historic Monuments

Built in 1519 by the Portuguese in the Emmanuel style, this cathedral was unfortunately destroyed on the orders of King Emmanuel during their retreat from the city in 1541. Only the vaultless chapel and the choir survived this destruction. Subsequently, what remained of the cathedral was converted into a public hammam, the Hammam al Bwiba, which continued to operate until the early XNUMXth century.

At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the Department of Fine Arts intervened to remedy this situation by classifying the cathedral as a historic monument.
