Tinmel Mosque

A hundred kilometers from Marrakech, on the road to Asni, after crossing a narrow steep valley, a small mosque barely 50 meters on each side. A real architectural jewel, this Almohad building is of great purity, whose architecture is typical of this era, of which we still have other examples today: the Koutoubia in Marrakech, the Hassan tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville.
Site restored in 1997, it is a high place in Moroccan history. In the 11th century, Ibn Toumert went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He returns convinced that the Almoravid sultans are too decadent and must therefore be overthrown.
It is the beginning of a long conquest which will end for the Mahdi at the gates of Marrakech, in the eagle's nest of Tinmel, where he is buried. His successor, Abdelmounem Ibn Ali gave the Mahdi a mausoleum in the village of Tinmel, and built a mosque. The village then became a real cultural and spiritual center of the empire. A royal palace will also be built there.
